School Lane

School Lane. No. 34 is the second door from the right

In 1901, No.34 was occupied by George Sail (39), his wife Lucy (40), and their one daughter, Florence (16).

George had been born in Broughton and was probably an orphan. He moved to Kettering to work in the Boot and Shoe trade as a Shoe Pressman. Lucy also worked as a Shoe Machinist, and they may well have met in the same factory.

By 1901, however, their situation had changed considerably. George was prosperous enough to be listed in Kelly's Directory as a Music Dealer and Teacher, and their house doubled as a shop.

In a house opposite the houses in the photo lived Ernest Crayford and his wife till about 1970. He was a foreman at Loake Bros shoe manufacturers and Mayor of Kettering shortly before that time. Near the bottom of School lane on the right hand side was the back entrance to Burtons who have recently closed. On the opposite side of the road going into a cul de sac was Wendy's beauty Salon.

Am I right in thinking that Wallis and Linnel's factory was behind the houses shown on the photograph? My grandmother's sister, husband and one daughter lived in School Lane and he was the the caretaker I think ( 1950's...?)
